Symposium on Social Media
"Just Imagine: Getting Started; Being Safe and Appropriate in Social Media"
Some of us have yet to create a Facebook or Twitter page or have not done much with the ones we've started and feel a little left out of all the online excitement. This session is geared toward those who need a quick tutorial for getting going online. We'll show new or prospective users where to find account management tools that will keep certain information private. We'll also present the Army's 'guidelines for online behavior' so we can be aware of the Army's standard and strive to meet it.
Presented by Deborah Stekl Knutson, TSA West and Jennifer Byrd, NHQ
"Just Imagine: Using Video and YouTube At the Grassroots Level"
Move people to action by telling The Salvation Army story with short films made on the local level. You can engage experienced film makers - pro bono - AND use the technology you already have to create documentary- style films that capture the essence of the Army's ministry to people in need. Then use your videos for major events, in-person meetings and post them online to YouTube where they can be seen by thousands. In this session you'll learn the nuts and bolts and see examples of good videos and case studies that communicate the Army in action - all at a low cost.
Presented by Bert Decker, SA Board Member San Francisco
"Just Imagine: Social Media Has Changed Disaster Response - For Good"
Without social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Skype, The Salvation Army in the U.S. would have struggled to tell the story about our disaster response in Haiti. Within hours of the deadly quake, staff at Xenophon Strategies in Washington DC were working with Bob Poff in Haiti to answer media inquiries, and - most important - engage donors in the relief effort. And, social media is not just a tool for the responders; it's increasingly being used to report crisis events and cries for help when the 9-1-1 system is down or overloaded. Learn how the social web is changing our world as a key agency in disaster response efforts around the globe.
Presented by Mark Hazlin, Xenophon and Jennifer Byrd, NHQ
"Just Imagine - Expanding Your Reach Through Social Media Best Practices"
The Salvation Army's online presence is growing by leaps and bounds. Much of the growth is due to the use of social media tools like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, etc. It's never been easier to post links, organize events, tell stories, recruit volunteers, and so much more. During this symposium we'll learn from some of the leaders in the Army's social media sphere and find out how they've used the social web to engage their core audience.
